Act of Courage #1. Conduct Joint Tours

Too few members of Congress take the time to get to know their peers from across the aisle. Undertaking “joint tours” of each other’s districts or states is a great way for them to better understand each other and our nation.

What better way to learn about America than jointly touring it with a counterpart from across the aisle? What better way for members of Congress to get to know one another—as real people from real places with shared American values—than to meet on each other’s home turf? Spending time in each other’s living rooms, backyards, and neighborhoods is the best way to build the personal relationships necessary to withstand, and eventually transform, the divisive nature of Washington.

A new program, called the American Congressional Exchange (ACE), was launched in early 2018 by the Bipartisan Policy Center for this very purpose. ACE has conducted a number of tours since then, and has now gone virtual in the COVID era.
